Central Nervus System (CNS)

Anti-convulsants

Anticonvulsants are prescription medications that are used to treat and prevent seizures.

During a seizure there is a change in the level of nerve cell electrical signals from a normal level to an excessive or abnormal amount of nerve signals.

This increased nerve activity is responsible for the signs and symptoms of a seizure (1).

Approximately 10% of the population has at least one seizure in their lifetime. Globally, epilepsy is the fourth most common neurologic disorder after migraine, cerebrovascular disease (stroke), and Alzheimer disease (2).

The abnormal electrical activity of epilepsy may result in a variety of events, including loss of consciousness, abnormal movements, atypical or odd behavior, and distorted perceptions that are of limited duration but recur if untreated (2).

How anticonvulsants help? (1)

Anticonvulsants stabilize the level of nerve cell impulses and are used for a range of conditions including:

  • Epilepsy
  • Seizure disorders
  • Nerve pain (neuropathic pain)
  • Bipolar disorder

Recovery and outlook? (1)

About 70% of people become seizure-free with proper treatment within a few years (3).

Treatments for epilepsy may help to control seizures and may result in some people becoming seizure-free.

Certain factors may impact epilepsy outlooks, such as seizure type, medication, and lifestyle factors (4).
