Antibiotics
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are a class of medications used to fight bacterial infections. Antimicrobial drugs are effective in treating infections due to their selective toxicity; they can injure or kill microorganisms without harming host cells (1).
Antibiotics are powerful medications that treat certain infections and can save lives when used properly. They either stop bacteria from reproducing or destroy them.
Before bacteria can multiply and cause symptoms, the immune system can typically kill them. White blood cells (WBCs) attack harmful bacteria — even if symptoms occur, the immune system can usually cope and fend off the infection.
However, sometimes the number of harmful bacteria is excessive, and the immune system cannot clear them all. Antibiotics are useful in this scenario (2).
How antibiotics help?
Antibiotics may be used to treat bacterial infections that:
- are unlikely to clear up without antibiotics.
- could take too long to clear without treatment.
- carry a risk of more serious complications.
- could infect others (3).
Recovery and outlook? (1)
Recovery while taking antibiotics usually depends on the type of infection that the patient has and also the treatment plan that’s been prescribed for them.
